What LLMs Actually Read in 2026: Why llms.txt Is Not a Ranking Signal

llms.txt is not a ranking file. Google does not use it. What actually gets you cited is source HTML, Bing indexing, schema.org, and a distinct entity.

Rumors are partly true. llms.txt is not dead, but it does not do what most think. In 2026 it serves as a map for coding agents, not an organic ranking tool.

What the data shows

Ahrefs studied 137,210 domains in May 2026: 97% of llms.txt files received zero hits, mostly coming from SEO tools.

What actually works

  • Unique source HTML for every URL without relying on client-side JS rendering.
  • Sitemap submission in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • IndexNow protocol pings for rapid AI search indexing.
  • Schema.org JSON-LD (TechArticle, ProfessionalService).
